wellness weekend:northumberland county

Following dietary restrictions or staying compliant with your healthy eating habits can be challenging while you are on the go. When you are on the edge of hangry, it is easy to give into the chain restaurants and fast food which usually means “cheat meal”. But, if you are travelling to Northumberland County, my sister Kayla and I have put together a Wealth of Wellness Weekend Guide to save you time, energy and the guilt.

HEALTHY EATS

PORT HOPE

Suntree ($$) 19 Ontario St, Port Hope, ON L1A 2T7

Suntree is the cutest health food store with bulk and cosmetic refillery and many eco-friendly products. They sell a variety of supplements, health food alternatives and local produce.

They have 2 great reusable incentives: “bring a bag, take a bag” and “ reusable containers” options in case you forget your own. When we consciously reduce buying plastic by reusing bags and containers we are one step closer to  rather than purchasing as well as avoiding purchasing your own bottle/container for the refillery stations.

By reducing plastic and reusing bags, we are one step closer to a sustainable environment.

Happenstance ($$) 66 Walton St, Port Hope, ON L1A 1N1

This cafe was SUCH a vibe. It is a beautiful, open, rustic and sustainable space. They offer coffee, tea, beverages and delicious food with locally sourced ingredients. They have a small breakfast and lunch menu available for all dietary needs. Some foods to expect are Eggs, bacon & ham but also vegan chilli and soup as well as gluten free sandwich options.

We opted for the baked goods; gluten free and vegan pumpkin cranberry muffins which were delicious, with chai tea lattes made with oat milk. One of the best things about this cafe is their use of clean nut milk alternatives; unsweetened oat, almond and soy, with the option to sweeten drinks with alternative sweeteners. These lattes were so good we went back on our way home for a vanilla oat latte for a quick caffeine hit.

Freshly baked, ancient grain bread was also available to purchase, however these are not gluten free or vegan. A full selection is available at their separate bakery and coffee roasting building in Port Hope @ 135 Peter St, Port Hope, ON L1A 1C5

COBOURG

The Market & Smor ($)

39 King St E, Cobourg, ON K9A 1K6

The Market & Smor is a modern day indoor farmers market that has clean, minimally packaged and seasonal produce. They provide quality produce and healthy on the go options, made in-house and locally. Such as fresh pressed juices, homemade humus and pestos, pickled vegetables, dressings and more.

In addition to the amazing produce selection, there is a bakery section in the back room with a variety of options. Everything was reasonably priced and had an information card stating whether it was allergen friendly. Lucky for us there were chocolate chip cookies and brownies, both gluten free and vegan! The cookie was hands down the best gooey, moist and delicious ‘healthy’ cookie in the county.

St. Anne’s Bakery ($$)

252 Academy Hill Rd, Grafton, ON K0K 2G0

Calling all celiacs! St Anne’s Bakery is a dedicated gluten free bakery with additional dietary restrictions available. Some options available are panini’s, quesadillas, soups, sandwiches, fresh bread and yummy baked goods, especially their butter tarts! Unfortunately, it is not as accommodating for vegan diets but did however have a couple treat options; a truffle tart and an oat bar. Some good news though in the warmer seasons, their vegan ice cream and sorbet is to die for!

Quick side not: Do not travel to the main spa, the bakery is separate.

Craft Food House ($$)

201 Division St, Cobourg, ON K9A 3P6

Craft Food House is a modern breakfast & lunch restaurant in downtown Cobourg that offers options for any health fanatic: gluten free, vegan, vegetarian or someone just looking for a healthier lunch spot. They are famous for their kale salad which is suggested as the side dish for every menu item. We had the 120/80 salad & the Chana Masala bowl, both were very nutritious but there was a clear favourite: the Chana Masala, a chickpea and potato curry served on a bed of rice with just the right amount of spice and exactly enough to take home for another meal; everyone's favourite.
